2006 Toyota Prius

The Prius, introduced in 2001 as only the second hybrid offered in this country, has quickly cemented its role as the most popular hybrid around.

Certainly one of the primary reasons has been the way the Prius administers its electric power; it kicks in until the car reaches 12 mph, then gives over to the gas engine in an almost seamless transition. When needed, the electric motor will kick back on to provide additional power. When coasting or cruising, the gas engine turns off and the battery recharges. In short, the car never has to be plugged into a wall, which, in the opinion of many car watchers, was what kept a wider audience from unconditionally embracing the idea of hybrid vehicles.

For the 2006 model, Toyota has improved the Prius' aerodynamic styling, lowering its coefficient of drag to a measly 0.26, ranking it right at the top of that measure for any vehicle produced anywhere.

Also added to the 2006 models are a standard tire-pressure-monitoring system and an optional rearview camera. Standard features also include electric-inverter automatic air conditioning, a CD stereo, and power windows, locks and mirrors . Other available options include leather seats, a keyless startup mechanism and an upgraded stereo that offers a mini-jack port for connecting portable music. Cargo volume totals 16.1 cubic feet. Front and rear lighting units have been revised for the 2006 models.

The Prius has a 106.3-inch wheelbase, and its overall length measures out at a fairly compact 175 inches.

The Prius' interior comfortably accommodates five adults with much improved elbow room than in previous models. Front head and shoulder room has also been slightly expanded, although space in the rear headroom is a bit cramped. Legroom in the rear is more than adequate for most adults. Sightlines are generally good, although the solid bar across the back glass interferes with visibility somewhat.

The 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine generates 76 horsepower, and the electric motor is a 500-volt 50-kilowatt model. The hybrid powertrain combines with a continuously variable transmission.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes and traction control, with optional side-impact and side curtain-type airbags. Advanced front airbags are installed in the 2006 models.

Overall, the 2006 Prius outguns the Honda Civic hybrid in terms of performance and acceleration, although at higher speeds the power remains a little weak. But for passing, merging and quick acceleration, the Prius measures up well to other models in its size class. Overall ride comfort is fine.
