2006 Pontiac G6

Pontiac has added a Coupe and Convertible body style to the G6 line in 2006, further expanding the G6 line, which replaced the increasingly stale Grand Am line. Built on a slightly lengthened version of Pontiac 's Epsilon platform, the new models offer improved handling and increased backseat room that approaches luxury-car standards. Backseat passengers can really stretch out. A smoother ride is another benefit of the expanded wheelbase.

The Coupe is powered by a 240-hp, 3.9-liter V6 that can be combined with the standard four-speed automatic transmission or an optional six-speed manual transmission. The V6 power makes up for the slightly underpowered previous G6 models.

The Coupe is available in either GT or GTP trim, another addition to the model line in 2006. Standard equipment on the base model includes air conditioning; power windows, locks and mirrors; a 60/40-split-folding rear seat; a CD player; and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The GT ups the ante with power-adjustable pedals, an eight-speaker Monsoon sound system, a rear spoiler and alloy wheels. Those opting for the GTP trim will gain sport suspension, stability control, 18-inch wheels and automatic climate control. Available options include a remote start system, satellite radio and chrome alloy wheels.

The interior of the G6 is stylish and roomy, with side bolsters that support riders while you take fast turns. Gauges and panels are outfitted with plenty of chrome and metal alloy, although overall the materials used – i.e., plastic – are perhaps cheaper than those used in the models' competitors. As mentioned, rear legroom is extremely generous.

Standard safety features include four-wheel disc brakes and antilock brakes and traction control (except on the base sedan.) Head-protecting side curtain airbags are optional on sedans only.

NHTSA crash testing gives the G6 sedan the top rating of five stars for its protection of the driver in frontal impacts, as does side-impact protection for both front and rear passengers; front-passenger protection has a four-star rating. As of this writing, the IIHS had not performed any crash tests on the Pontiac G6.

Overall, the G6 is well powered compared to other base models in its class. The engine is fuel-efficient and provides plenty of torque but can get somewhat noisy at higher rev speeds. Those seeking better performance would do well to look at the 3.9-liter GTP; the suspension is snappier than on the lower-end G6 models, and the overall driving experience measures favorably against similar models, while providing an interior comparable to higher-end luxury models.
