The new model has a slightly shorter wheelbase – 4.7 inches has been lost from the previous year – and the front and rear overhangs lost 4.4 inches. The GS double-wishbone front and independent multilink rear suspension comes over, and after some jiggering to adapt to the IS, provides a smooth ride.
Other features coming from the GS include the electronics - traction control, stability control, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and BrakeAssist –0 that come under the umbrella of the "Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management" so touted by Lexus. Some reviewers have complained that the all-encompassing VDIM system is too intrusive; disabling it is impossible, and drivers who prefer their sports cars on the untamed side may feel as though their hand is being held.
Also new on the year's IS the all-aluminum 60-degree, DOHC, 24-valve 3.5 liter V6, which replaces a straight six, and features VVT-i variable valve timing, all adding up to an impressive 306 at 6,400 rpm and a robust 277 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm.
The powerplant teams up with a six-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled through a nicely-positioned steering wheel-mounted paddle shifter.
Standard feature on the IS 350 include keyless entry and ignition, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power doors and windows, cruise control, leather seating, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a moonroof and a 13-speaker premium audio system with an in-dash six-disc CD changer.
If this isn't enough, available options include a 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, 18-inch wheels, 10-way power seats, a navigation system, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, rear park assist, rain-sensing wipers, corner-adaptive headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity and bi-HID headlights.
It's hard to argue with the quality of the IS 350: handling, performance, luxury – it's all there. But some sports car enthusiasts may feel that the ever-present technology – specifically the VDIM system – tips the IS 350 over the line that separates sports car from luxury sedan. If you want a calm, safe, powerful driving experience, the IS 350 might be for you. If you like to feel the road, even the bumps along it, you might want to walk down the road to the nearest BMW dealer.
