2006 Honda Civic Si

The Honda Civic has had an unprecedented run as the most consistently reliable and durable vehicle in the economy-car class. Nothing in the 2006 model will shake its domination.

That said, with its 2006 model Honda hopes to expand the Civic's workhorse reputation, and snare some of the younger car-buying audience. The 2006 Civic is sexier, more powerful and performs better than any previous Civic model. All this without sacrificing its traditional virtues makes the 2006 Civic the best Civic yet produced.

Available as a sedan or coupe, the Honda Civic offers a number of different trim designs. The coupe has lost some trunk and rear-seat leg room, due to the model's renewed emphasis on style – the windshield rake is steeper than previous versions, smaller front and rear overhangs and a smaller tire-to-fender space. The coupe's wheelbase has also shrunk.

Other things have grown: like horsepower, for all models. Some observers had rated the performance of previous Civic Si hatchbacks a letdown, but the 2006 coupe doesn't disappoint. With a more powerful 197-hp engine, a sport-tuned suspension and a six-speed manual with a limited-slip differential, there's little to grumble about.

The Civic lineup offers three main trim levels: DX, LX and EX. Both the Civic Hybrid and the Civic Si are equipped to a level approximate to the EX trim, though the Si comes with a standard sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels and special interior trim; the Hybrid has automatic climate control but no sunroof. For the EX, Hybrid and Si, satellite radio and a navigation system are optional.

Other EX features include EX alloy wheels, a moon roof, a 60/40-split rear seatback, two extra speakers, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and a portable music player jack.

DX, LX and EX models are all powered by a 1.8-liter, inline four-cylinder engine creating 140 hp at 6,300 rpm and 128 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm. Transmission options include either a standard five-speed manual or an optional five-speed automatic transmission. The Si is the most powerful Civic at 197-hp, and comes with an exclusive six-speed manual with a limited-slip front differential.

Every Civic comes standard with antilock brakes with EBD, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front-seat head restraints. The Si has four-wheel discs brakes.

The Civic Si continues to offer one of the best values in the marketplace while upgrading its street credit with an impressive power boost.
