2006 Volkswagen Touareg |
 |
Perhaps encouraged by past success, VW has made no significant changes to its 2006 Touareg model. Based on the Porsche Cayenne, the Touareg is a four-door wagon with a rear liftgate and no available third-row seating.
|
Three engine models are offered with the 2006 edition: a 3.6-liter V6 with 280 hp – which will replace the current 3.2-liter V6 offering 240-hp, a 4.2–liter 310-hp V8, and 5.0- liter 310-hp turbodiesel V10 generating 553 pounds-feet of torque. The diesel-powered Touareg offers truly powerful acceleration thanks to the abundance of torque.
All Touareg models offer an all-wheel-drive system designed for especially demanding off-road conditions, and come with a 6-speed automatic with manual shift gate.
All engine models combine with a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, allowing the Touareg to tow up to 7,716 pounds when properly equipped.
The electronically-controlled 4XMotion permanent four-wheel drive system includes off-road gearing, whereby any percentage of the engine's power can be directed to either the front or rear wheels. Off-road helpers include Hill Climb Assist, Hill Descent Assist and a locking center differential.
2006 models now include a rearview camera with the navigation system. Also new to this year: an optional rear spare-tire carrier.
The Touareg's unibody galvanized-steel construction gives the vehicle something of a carlike appearance compared to other off-road SUV models. There are echoes of VW's luxury Phaeton model in the shape of the grill bar, and overall the body sports a rounded, athletic look.
Dimensions are: 112.4-inch wheelbase supporting a 68-inch height. The Touareg can clear 11.8 inches with the available air suspension, and can ford water up to 22.8 inches deep. You can drive it up 35 degree slopes, and the side-tipping angle is 45 degrees.
Again echoing the premium Phaeton, the five-passenger Touareg's interior is replete with burl wood, chrome and aluminum. Dual-zone automatic climate control and a sunroof are standard. Leather upholstery comes standard on all models other than the V6. Other available options include: navigation system, rear obstacle detection, and heated steering. Cargo volume is 71 cubic feet when the rear seat is folded down.
Safety features are decent: Side-impact and side curtain-type airbags are come installed as do antilock brakes, traction control and an Electronic Stabilization Program.
The Touareg handles with the stability and athleticism of a smaller vehicle, while offering off-road enthusiasts the chance to go way off road, although we'd recommend the air suspension for real challenges.
