2006 Chevy Monte Carlo SS |
 |
Throughout the Chevrolet Monte Carlo's long and storied history, the model has undergone several character changes, from upscale coupe in the early 1970's to the fuel-conscious models later that decade to the toned-down versions of the mid-1990's. |
The latest incarnation of this long-lived marque finds a new structure offering improved handling and a revamped interior and exterior. In place of the previous supercharged V-6, the model now sports a small-block 5.3-liter V8 giving an impressive 303hp and 323 pounds-feet of torque, making this years' model more of a highway cruiser than a quick-turn artist. To accommodate this extra power, the SS has incorporated a sturdier version of GM's regular four-speed automatic. The new engine also features GM's Displacement On Demand technology, which allows the engine to switch between four- and eight-cylinder operation. Chevrolet claims that this system will increase fuel-economy by as much as 12 percent.
Antilock brakes, Seatbelt pretensioners, and traction control come standard on all Monte Carlo models, while front-seat side airbags are optional. Government crash tests have given the current-generation Monte Carlos the top rating of five stars for protection of the driver and front passenger in a front-end collision. A tire-pressure monitor is standard on models equipped with 17- and 18-inch wheels.
The SS sports a stylish front-end look, with a dual-split grille featuring an embedded black diamond pattern, echoing the Impala model styling. All Monte Carlo models come with a rear spoiler; the SS's version suggests that Chevy designers have been watching a lot of NASCAR racing; and they seemed to have borrowed from the Corvette's distinctive bright chrome tailpipes.
The Monte Carlo 's interior is spacious and comfortable given the coupe trim. The seats are roomy and can accommodate a variety of body-types. Unusual in a coupe, rear seat space is more than adequate for most passengers. The interior of the 2006 model has been revamped for a cleaner, sleeker, more modern look, reflected in the presence of an input jack for portable music players. The cockpit is outfitted with sporty metallic trim. The SS comes with 18-inch wheels, performance-tuned suspension and full-perimeter ground effects.
The SS will appeal to buyers looking for a muscle-bound motor in a stylish body, but the available power coupled with the front-wheel drive results in a bit too much torque steer for this reviewer. But if you're just interested in cruising down a straightaway in a classic, this may be your model.
