2006 Chevy Corvette

2006 Chevy Corvette

Chevy revamped the storied Corvette in 2004, adding power, handling, and acceleration and braking. The first model to benefit from these changes was the new hatchback coupe, then a new convertible.

Now Chevy brings out the Z06 coupe, which it calls the "the most aerodynamically efficient Corvette ever". With a 0.286 coefficient of drag, they could be right. It's offered as a fixed-roof hatchback coupe only.

Under its hood the Z06 sports a 7.0-liter V-8 engine, generating 505 hp at 6,300 rpm and 470 pounds-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm. The model comes standard with a six-speed manual gearshift, while a paddle-shifted six-speed automatic is optional.

The redesigned transmission uses paddle-shifters and incorporates two electronically controlled automatic modes: Drive and Sport.

The exterior styling of the 2006 Z06 incorporates many elements familiar to the Corvette family, but this model is the first in several decades to offer fixed headlamps; Xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights. In the rear, the car features rounded taillights and integrated exhaust tips. Chevy claims that the redesigned tapered rear deck improves high-speed performance by keeping the car's rear closer to the road. The frame is composed of hydro-formed steel with aluminum and magnesium components.

Entry is gained through GM's Keyless Access rather than standard door handles. Operating the fob unlocks the doors and can also start the engine.

The Z06 is about 3 inches wider than other Corvette models. Revised performance-enhancing engine technology includes as titanium connecting rods and intake valves. Chevrolet claims acceleration for the Z06 zero to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

Inside, the dual-cockpit design is enhanced by the use of a two-tone split. The control gauges make use of always-on backlighting to display its white LED technology.

The control console includes a standard CD player with MP3 capability; options include a Bose system with in-dash six-CD changer and XM Satellite Radio. GM's OnStar communication system and a navigation system are also optional.

Cargo volume beneath the hatchback lid tops out at 22 cubic feet; the convertible model offers 11 cubic feet, but dropping the top shrinks that number to 5 cubic feet. A power-operated top is optional.

Safety features include all-disc antilock brakes and an optional sport seat with side-impact airbags.

Overall, the 2006 Chevy Corvette Z06 is a beast: fast, smooth and quick. It's the most powerful passenger car engine Chevy or GM has ever produced.
