2006 Cadilac Escalade EXT |
 |
Introduced in 2002 as a luxury answer to Chevrolet's popular Avalanche, the Cadillac Escalade EXT created a new vehicle category; the luxury sport utility truck. The 2006 model continues in this trend, upping with the ante with more room and more goodies. |
As with previous models, the 2006 model transforms itself from a five-passenger SUV with a small bed in back (5 feet, 3 inches) to a full-length pickup with a full-size bed (8 feet 1 inch) by dropping the Midgate, the panel separating the cab from the pickup bed. Handily, the Midgate folds into the interior of the cab, creating some 8x4 square feet of bed space.
Owners can also create more cargo space by simply removing the rear window, opening up the circulation. The windows are easily stored onboard.
In the 2006 model a sliding load floor capable of holding half a ton of cargo comes standard; a power-sliding tonneau cover has been added as an option.
The EXT's styling is not significantly different from that of the regular Escalade. The vehicle is 221 inches long, 79.5 inches wide, stands 76 inches high (counting the luggage rack) and has a wheelbase measures 130 inches.
The EXT comes with a 6.0 liter V-8 that provides 345 HP and 380 pounds-feet of torque, numbers similar to the regular Escalade and the Escalade ESV. The transmission is a 4-speed automatic, supporting the StabiliTrak electronic stability system and a Road Sensing Suspension System that adjusts to various types of road surfaces. Towing capacity tops out at an impressive 7,300 pounds.
Optional goodies include an upgraded version of the OnStar communication system (the regular version is standard); a seven-speaker Bose sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer; touch-screen navigation; and a DVD-based rear entertainment system featuring a 7-inch flip-down screen. XM Satellite Radio and a tire-pressure monitor come standard.
EXT Safety features include front-seat side-impact airbags, Dual-stage front airbags that employ a passenger-sensing system, antilock brakes, programmable daytime running lights, and Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist, a feature that warns if the vehicle is approaching an object while backing up. Given the poor sightlines to the rear of the EXT, this feature can come in particularly useful in certain situations.
Overall, the 20-06 Cadillac EXT continues the EXT tradition of offering premium features found in traditional SUVS with the load-hauling capacity offered by pickup trucks. Although it's sometimes difficult to picture an EXT being used for serious labor, the model has found an enthusiastic audience, and will likely continue to do so.
