2006 BMW M6

BMW enthusiasts have long been clamoring for a high-performance M-class vehicle. In late 2004, BMW revealed that an M6 coupe was going to arrive in markets a few years after the regular 6 Series. Scheduled to hit the US in spring 2006, the M6 will offer the M5 sedan drive train; the 5.0-liter V-10 gives 500 horsepower and 383 pounds-feet of torque, along with a seven-speed sequential manual transmission. The M6 accelerates from a 0 to 60 mph in speedy 4.5 seconds.

According to BMW press releases, the M6's suspension is "built exclusively for sporting performance," without sacrificing the space and comfort of a typical 2+2 car.

Other changes to the standard design of the 6-series include a slightly altered front air dam with capacious secondary intake openings that provide another source of engine-cooling air.

The side sills are shaped for minimal aerodynamic resistance, and forged aluminum 19-inch wheels have been added – designed from the ground up for the M6. Rounding out these changes, the side slat panels are ornamented with an "M" logo.

The roof of the M6's is composed out of carbon fiber, and the car has been given an improved power-to-weight ratio than the new M5 sedan. Traction has also been improved thanks to the M differential lock, which senses and adjusts to differing speeds. The Series' Dynamic Stability Control uses two separate driving programs, including M Dynamic mode, which BMW promises has been “tailored to the sporting driver”.

The interior of the M6 has been similarly upgraded to match the power potential of the new V10 engine. The seats offer power lumbar and backrest width adjustment, resulting in added comfort for driver and passengers. The seats also come with a three-stage heating system, incorporating the seat bottom, the backrest and the side supports, enveloping passengers in a veritable heat cocoon. The rear seats, nicely contoured, are separated for a cushion, which can be comfortably used as an armrest.

All seats are upholstered in Merino leather, as are the console, handbrake lever, door panels, door handles and armrests. The cars come with installed wood trim with an optional piano-black finish. Mdrive allows the driver to select from the preferred drive train and suspension settings with the push of a button, with an optional heads-up display available to the M series only.

The V10 delivers 550hp and 383 pounds-feet of torque. Rev speeds top out at 8,250. When starting up, the engine delivers around 400hp, which can be increased to the maximum by pushing a button on the selector-lever. Drivelogic offers 11 gear change options; six in sequential mode and five in automatic-shifting mode.

Safety features include Dynamic Stability Control and six installed airbags.
