2006 BMW 325 |
 |
Originally introduced into the US in 1977, the BMW 325 has the automaker's signature vehicle, garnering a widespread fanbase. The 2006 325 is the fifth generation of this popular model, the first significant redesign since 1999's fourth-generation rollout. The model is larger but lighter than the previous generation, thanks in large part to improvements in materials used. |
Sports car aficionados will appreciate the significant engine improvement offered by the inline V6; more horsepower and more torque for those tight turns. Also appealing to driving buffs will be the standard six-speed manual transmission, with the automatic version optional, a reversal from the usual configuration, but one, which makes sense given the historical BMW commitment to driving experience over ease-of-use.
Also new in the 2006 models is the suspension, which now comes configured in a five-link rear system, which allows for greater body rigidity. Also, run-flat tires are standard on all models, a feature borrowed from some of BMW's larger models.
The size of the 3-series is creeping upwards. In the latest models, the wheelbase has expanded to 108.7 inches, with its full length now standing at 178.2, a growth of 2.2.inches. The width is also larger, now a hefty 71.5 inches, and the height has grown slightly as well. And although the model is stretching in every direction, it remains a compact, in feel and driving experience.
Interior space has also expanded slightly; rear seat room has been improved, as has front headroom, should room and trunk volume, which now tops out at 12 cubic feet. If this is insufficient, a folding rear seat comes optional.
BMW joins the 21st century by offering a multi-function remote to replace the now-old-fashioned key, and enthusiasts will enjoy the push-button engine response, although no doubt some will miss the old turnkey solution.
The powerplant is more than adequate: a 3.0 liter inline six cylinder which gives the driver a sturdy 215 HP and 18`5 pounds-feet of torque in the 325 sedan model. Those opting for the 6-speed automatic transmission will be able to choose from Normal , Sport and Manual modes.
Changed from previous 3-series a model is BMW's offering a side curtain-type airbag for protection of both front and rear-seat passengers. Also changed from previous models, the front airbags are seat-mounted rather than door-mounted.
Overall, BMW has improved the handling and sportiness of the already-enjoyable 3-series driving experience. The larger body size has in no way affected this car's well-deserved reputation for handling, and the 2006 models will only continue this legacy.
