It's been awhile since a Buick passenger model offered V-8 power. The 4.6-liter 32-valve dual-overhead-cam V-8 offers an estimated 275hp; the model can also be equipped with a 195-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 designed to meet the Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle standards. Both engines come equipped with electronic throttle control.
Responding to comments on previous models' sketchy handling, the Lucerne debuts GM's Magnetic Ride Control system, and GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability system is available. Also available is a DVD-based navigation system, XM Satellite Radio, a 245-watt nine-speaker sound system, a remote starter, and heated windshield-washer fluid coupled with rain-sensing wipers.
Buick has taken some pains in its marketing campaign to emphasize the effectiveness of the Lucerne 's QuietTuning, which they claim reduces the undesired wind, road and powertrain noise that has bedeviled some Buick models in the past.
Buick has mined some of the design ideas of its recent concept car, the Velite, for use on the Lucerne . Specifically, the Lucerne sports a new slat-designed front grille showing thin vertical strips and a chrome Buick emblem. The headlight modules, composed of Polycarbonate, curve down into the front fenders, and the front fascia sports dual air intakes.
Buick has also mined some ideas from its design past: redesigned chrome-plated portholes recall Buick's glory days. The V-6 Lucerne CX and CXL models sport three portholes on each side, while the V-8 sedans are outfitted with four on each side.
The 60-degree windshield rake and the 70-degree rear glass is something of a departure from past designs. Horizontal tail lamps featuring floating inner lenses fold into the deck lid, divided by another Buick emblem. V-8 CXS models also offer chrome-topped split exhaust.
Models offer seating for either five or six occupants. The upholstery is done up in French seams and stitching, and second-row legroom tops out at a roomy 41 inches, thanks to Lucerne's long wheelbase.
Six airbags are standard in all Lucerne models: a dual-stage driver's-side airbag, a dual-depth front passenger-side airbag, and side-impact and side curtain-type devices.
Buick has been quite proud of the Lucerne 's tight lines, especially the wheel-to-wheel well ratios. Chrome wheels are on offer, and painted aluminum wheels accommodate 18-inch tires on the CXS sedan. The CX comes with 16-inch aluminum wheels, while the CXL models offer a 17-inch version. The Lucerne measures 204 inches long, stands 58 inches tall and is 74 inches wide; it's poised on a 115.5-inch wheelbase,
