2004 Cadilac XLR

2004 Cadilac XLR

After a long absence from the sports coupe space, Cadillac remedied that situation in 2004 with the introduction of the XLR, a retractable-hardtop with luxury outfitting and sports-performance tuning.

Cadillac has improved on the model with the addition of an all-new 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 with variable valve timing. The power plant produces 320 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 310 pounds-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm. The standard five-speed-automatic transmission offers Driver Shift Control.

Also joining the list of improvements for 2006: a head-up display, radar-controlled adaptive cruise control and GMs' patented StabiliTrak electronic stability system. The model also offers Adaptive forward lighting, which is designed to improve illumination in difficult lighting conditions. XM Satellite Radio with a cleverly concealed antenna comes standard.

The XLR also comes with Keyless Access with push-button start, allowing true keyless operation. Safety concerns dictate that the engine will not start unless the remote is in the car and the brake pedal is depressed.

The sleek, curvy XLR is a nice blend of Cadillac design history and modern-day high-tech style. Cadillac says the XLR is “a contemporary expression of Cadillac's heritage of landmark design and advanced technology”.

Sitting on a 105.7 wheelbase, the XLR is 177 inches long overall. Its retracting hardtop takes a little under 30 seconds. The hardtop sports composite exterior panels, a heated glass back window and glass rear-quarter windows. The top is made of aluminum and magnesium.

Inside, the XLR comfortably seats two occupants, surrounding them in eucalyptus and aluminum accents. An easily controlled heating and cooling system is installed in the seatbacks and cushion. The DVD navigation/entertainment system offers a 7-inch screen in the center console, but, presumably for safety reasons, the system is active only when the car is in Park.

Other entertainment features include a nine-speaker Bose audio system including an in-dash six-CD changer and XM Satellite Radio. Also standard is GM's OnStar communication system. The XLR's trunk capacity measures at 11.6 cubic feet with the hardtop up, but only 4.4 cubic feet when the roof is retracted.

Both seats contain side-impact airbags. The seat belts offer powered pretensioners, and four-channel all-disc antilock brakes, traction control and a stability system all come standard.

Overall, the XLR makes the grade as a high-performance high-luxe sports car. Ride is smooth; acceleration is hair-raising, steering tight and responsive. Cadillac only continues to improve this model, which should steadily gain admirers.
