2001 Acura MDX |
 |
Originally introduced in 2001, the Acura MDX, a midsize luxury sport utility vehicle, quickly became a fan favorite. Based on the Honda Odyssey minivan, the MDX is marketed as a leaner, cheaper alternative to such high-end offerings as the BMW X5, the Lexus RX 330 and the Mercedes Benz M-Class. |
The MDX offers a solid powertrain and a fairly comfortable ride, although on some surfaces the road noise can become unpleasantly loud. Although the handling of the MDX has some of the feel of a smaller, sportier car, sharp turns can result in some squishiness in the steering response, and the emergency braking is not world-class.
Acura has made only slight modifications to the model since last year, more specifically to the interior trim. On the 2006 Touring package models, ebony zebra wood-patterned trim and satin chrome accents have replaced the 2005 interior of burl wood and brighter chrome. Other than these changes, the vehicle remains substantially unchanged.
Recent tests have reduced the MDX's 3.5 liter V-6 horsepower rating from 265 to 253, although pickup remains good for a midsize utility vehicle. All-wheel drive comes standard on all models.
Honda's commitment to passenger safety is well represented in the MDX. The vehicle comes equipped with dual-stage front airbags, side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain-type airbags for all three-seat rows in the standard package. The standard brake package is all-disc antilock.
Interior seating is roomy and flexible, offering plenty of room for seven average-sized adults. Behind the two front bucket seats, both the center and rear rows fold down to allow for more cargo space, which at full capacity measures in at 81.5 cubic feet.
Standard luxury features include leather upholstery, remote keyless entry a power sun/moon roof and a seven-speaker cassette/CD system.
The exterior of the car boasts “ a balance between muscularity and elegance”, according to an Acura press release. The MDX boasts a wide, athletic stance, which translates into a good road grip in most weather conditions. The MDX stands 68.7 inches high and is 106.3 inches in length. The wheelbase measures up at 106.3 inches.
Overall, the Acura MDX offers a rewarding, solid driving experience, with impressive luxury features and decent road handling for a vehicle of its size. Although the changes from the 2005 model are few and negligible, the quality is such that the MDX remains an economical alternative to pricier, ritzier names. |
